The first ever BUBA Spring League fixture took place Saturday between the University of Oxford Kings and the Southampton Mustangs at Southampton. The Spring league which runs from February through to June is split into Northern and Southern conferences and will this year feature eight university teams. The inaugural fixture (a double header) saw the honours shared between these two old stalwarts of British baseball. Oxford, behind the strong arm of southpaw Paul Boland, came through a tight first game to run out eventual 13 - 9 winners. Boland helped his own cause by crashing the season's first longball in the 5th inning. A strong Mustang team however did not let the defeat get to them, showing the necessary mental resilience to rally in the second game of the day, emerging triumphant with a 6 - 5 victory. Mustangs rookie pitcher Alex Jinnah pitched his way to his first BUBA league win for the club. Over the upcoming months teams representing universities from all over the country will go head to head in a bid to be crowned as the first ever BUBA Champions. The Final Four competition, featuring the top two teams from each division willl take place at UEA's Colney Lane Field in June. |
