University baseball has come along way over the last 12 months, and while the 2008 edition of the Fall Cup was the inaugural event, the competition has already had to evolve.
In order to cope with the expanded BUBA membership, the late October competition has had to be split into two separate events. The top tier of competition will feature the old powerhouses of university baseball - Nottingham, Southampton, Oxford, UEA and rising stars Leeds - and will take place at Herts Baseball Club in Hemel Hempstead overthe weekend of the 17/18 October. Due to the odd number of teams competing, and the restricted number of fields and time in which to compete, a novel system of competition has been developed. Each team will be asigned a seeding based on their most recent performances in student competition (from 1 - 5) and will play two games on the first day against their neighnours in this circle: 1 For example, seed 1 will play seeds 3 and 5. Day one results will be collated into a league table that will decide who plays who for what on day two. P4 and P5 will face off in an elimination playoff with the winner going through to face P1 in the first semi-final. The second semi will be contested between P3 and P4. As expected, the two semi-final winners will go through to compete for the championship whilst the loser of semi-final 2 will go on to face the loser of the earlier elimination game. Below is the propsed schedule for the tournament to help illustrate the structure.
